1. When should you see a doctor for an abortion?
If you think you might be pregnant, you should contact your doctor right away. If you are thinking about having an abortion you should do it as soon as possible, don't wait. The earlier you talk to your doctor about it, the more options you have, and the risks or problems will be lower.
2. How will you know what decision is right for you?
The decision is very personal but counselling might be the best way to find out what is best for you. Talking to someone close to you may also help you make the right choice.
Some choices are:
a. Have the baby and keep it as your own.
b. Have the baby and give it up for adoption when it is born.
c. Have an abortion.
3. How can an abortion be done?
Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are you can choose to have a medical abortion or a surgical abortion. After 9 weeks, surgical abortion is the only option. In some states, girls younger than 18 will need parents permission in order to get an abortion. Abortions are rarely ever done after 24 weeks after conception.
4. How safe is abortion?
When done by a doctor abortions are very safe. Less than 1 out of 100 women have serious problems. The safest time to have an abortion is during the first trimester.
5. Will you be able to have children in the future?
Abortion doesn't stop you from being able to have babies in the future. A woman could become pregnant weeks after an abortion. Healing will take 1 to 3 weeks after an abortion and you should wear a condom while having sex after an abortion to allow the healing process time.
